Accutane

Accutane, or isotretinoin, is a synthetic form of vitamin A approved in 1982 for treatment of severe, cystic acne.  Because of the dangerous side effects and high cost of the drug, it is typically considered a ‘last resort’ for acne treatment.  Despite heavy restrictions on how and to whom a doctor can prescribe Accutane, it is still one of drug manufacturer Hoffman-LaRoche’s top sellers, earning the company more than a billion dollars in sales every year.  It also has one of the worst records amongst all prescription drugs, in terms of reports of adverse side effects.
