CHANTIX

In 2006, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved Chantix (varenicline tartrate) for sale in the United States. Chantix was marketed and sold by Pfizer. It was designed to help people quit smoking. Shortly after Chantix went on sale, an alarming number of reports started surfacing that users of the drug were suffering serious side effects including depression, suicide, heart attacks and seizures.

In 2009, after receiving an overwhelming number of adverse event reports, the FDA required Pfizer to add information to the warning labels in Chantix about a possible increased risk of suicide, suicidal thoughts and abnormal behavior that may be caused by taking Chantix.
