In 1996, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals began selling Prempro. Prempro is a hormone replacement therapy drug. Prempro is prescribed to treat postmenopausal hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. By 2001, Prempro became one of the best selling hormone replacement drugs on the market.

In 2002, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) determined that Prempro and similar drugs substantially increased the risk of stroke, blood clots, heart attacks and breast cancer.
