Yaz

Approved for sale to the public in 2006 by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Yaz, which contains a synthetic hormone called drospirenone was heralded as a birth control pill that also provided relief for severe PMS and acne.  By 2008, it was the best selling contraceptive drug on the market.  

Since then, sales have plummeted as more and more studies have emerged showing that Yaz patients are much more likely to suffer blood clotting and other life-threatening circulatory problems, including heart attacks and strokes, than women taking other birth control pills.  In December 2011, the U.S. FDA stated that Yaz labeling and warnings should be updated to inform potential users of the increased risk of blood clotting.
